It was late by the time Stephie returned home. Joel had already gone to bed. Juliana was finishing up the last of her lesson plans for December at the dining room table. The children weren’t the only ones who wanted a carefree four day holiday. She was stacking loose papers in preparation of calling it a night when her sister arrived at home.

“Wow, you’re still up? I thought you went to bed early these days,” Stephie said gaily. “I had a blast tonight. Imagine that. I thought all the fun was in LA.”

“Matt called.” Juliana didn’t want to relay the message, but not doing so would seem odd.

“Oh. Sorry I missed his call. But just as well if you told him I was out. Do him some good to see he’s not the only fish in the sea.”

“Said he’d like some of your snicker doodles.” Juliana studied her sister, curious as to her reaction.

Stephie laughed. “I can’t make snicker doodles–those are your specialities.”

“Apparently Matt doesn’t know that.”

“Well, maybe I did tell him back in the day that they were mine. He loved them. Back then I didn’t want him to think I wasn’t domestic. What a hoot. Make up a batch for me, will you?”

“Nope.” Juliana rose. “You’re on your own for this. I have plenty to do before Thanksgiving.”

“Oh come on. You can whip up a batch in no time.”

“Could, won’t.”

Stephie looked surprised. “Really, not even to help me out?”

“Really. I’m going to bed now. Matt wanted to know if you and Grampa wanted to go with him to the play on Wednesday.”

“What play?”

“The one my third graders are putting on.” She’d told Stephie a couple of times.

“Not sure. Why’s Matt going?”

Juliana didn’t want to tell her sister about their dating. Oddly, she felt protective of the time she and Matt had spent together. Nothing was going to spoil those memories for her.

She shrugged and headed for her room. Nothing was the same since Stephie returned home. How long was she really going to stay?

And how did Matt feel? He hadn’t said anything personal to her on the phone. Were the dates they’d shared over forever?
